Telecommuting encompasses many careers. You can be a nurse or a writer or even an artist. Some telecommuters work customer service type jobs like taking catalog orders. My first telecommuting was being a chat moderator for chat rooms at Martha Stewart’s website. I was also a photographer and writer for a city guide site.

Next thing I knew I was designing websites and writing my own content. Taking my own pictures…..
You just don’t know where a path will lead you.

If you currently work doing a job you feel you could do almost 100% from home and do it well — then approaching your boss or supervisor might be a way to obtain the work at home job and full time mom career you’re wanting.Getting Your Boss to Say “Yes” to Telecommuting, might be a helpful read in getting an idea of how to approach your boss.

Have a game plan and be prepared before you jump into this type of negotiations with your employer. You do not want to jeopardize your current paycheck!

Telecommuting and working at home if becoming more and more popular. It’s very cost effective. That’s certainly a good reason to bring up to your boss.

Even if your boss isn’t real keen on the idea….say you’re getting the vibe right off the bat that the answer is going to be “NO”. Don’t get your nose out of joint. Be ready. Ask your boss, if maybe he/she would be open to you “trying” out telecommuting for just a day or two each week. Even if it’s only one day a week – that is a HUGE step in the right direction.

With a program like GoToMyPC (which I am using right now on my laptop, it is so easy to work form home. If your job is primarily computer based – then remote access programs could be a real eye opener to your boss if he/she hasn’t ever heard of them or considered using them.

And just think of how cost effective it will be for you to get to work at home one day a week!

Now granted…sometimes the answer is just NO. As is the case for my husband. He could do so much of his work at home – but his company just doesn’t see it that way. But…maybe one day – you just never know.

So plant that seed. Drop a few hints. And then sit down and have a serious discussion with your boss about telecommuting and why you think it would work. And I mean not only work for YOU but for you company too.

Of course – you can always spend your lunch break looking for a telecommuting job! But don’t quit your day job til you’ve got one!
