Online Data Entry Jobs

Resources for Online Data Entry Jobs… Do They Exist?

Online data entry jobs are becoming more and more abundant thanks to the internet. No longer is this just a job that can only be done in an office setting. Companies have started utilizing programs that allow freelancers and contract workers to “tap” into their system and work on files and assignments. There are also huge crowdsourcing projects that allow speedy data entry workers to cash in. And I might add, these are no fee online typing jobs. There are no costs – you just need to be very proficient. So let's talk about the skills you might need next. (You might also want to check out my post, No Fee Work at Home Jobs for more ideas.)

Do I Need Special Training?

Yes and No. Most jobs do require a basic high school education or GED. That's a given. But they will probably gravitate toward potential candidates that have experience with spreadsheets and programs for spreadsheets like Excel. If you're not familiar with Excel or working on spreadsheets – you might not be qualified for many of the data entry jobs offered. Data entry seems to go hand in hand with spreadsheet work 75% of the time.

Along with this, there will be a WPM (words per minute) minimum. They vary, but most job listings that I have seen require an average of 60WPM. Typically you'll take a quick little online test that evaluates your WPM and sends it to the employer. If you feel you need to brush up on your typing or want to test yourself, you can go to a site like TypingTest.com.

What Are the Online Data Entry Jobs Like – What Will I Be Doing?

Some jobs or positions will have you working on an assignment alone, but many data entry jobs are now broke up into bite-size pieces and shopped out for micro-tasking. Meaning many people will work on one project. Micro-tasking is becoming very popular. Interested in micro-tasking? MTurk (Amazon) is a great place to get your feet wet. There aren't just data entry jobs, but all kinds of projects that allow you to make money. Though this isn't like being hired full-time for a data entry position, many find it a convenient, flexible way to pick up extra cash.

You might also take a look at Sigtrack. They hire off and on throughout the year and are especially in need of data entry services when elections are looming. They work a lot with voter registration data.

Is Special Equipment Needed for Online Data Entry Jobs?

Obviously, this requires anyone wanting to do data entry from home to have a computer. BUT, this needs to be a relatively new computer, with current OS versions that the company will require. Many are asking for WINDOWS 8 or 10 at a minimum right now). Your computer needs to be secure. As secure as possible. This means using the very best in antivirus software, like Norton AntiVirus. Many will allow MACs as well – but I see more specifically asking for PCs.

Resume? Or Does It Matter?

If you're searching for a job – you should have a resume. Whether it's for virtual work at home jobs that you're applying for or an offline job. Many employers will ask for one. You don't have to spend money having someone create your resume. Just create one yourself, making sure to highlight your education, skills and experience. When I've spoken to people that do the hiring for their company, they tell me that any email without a resume is promptly deleted.

If a job ad specifically says that you don't need a resume, so be it. But most legitimate listings will ask for a resume and many times a cover letter. Your cover letter is a chance to build initial rapport and highlight why you specifically are a match for the job.

Where Can I Start Searching for Data Entry Jobs?

I've got a great page on my site to get you started on that search. I list companies that hire data entry workers and I've reviewed many of these companies so that you can get even more details. So I would start here. Be sure to bookmark that page, so that you can check back often to see what new companies I have found. As well, I am always posting new job leads on the job board.

Here's a List of Online Data Entry Jobs to Look Into:

1. Smart Locating (My Smart Locating Review)
– First and foremost, you need to be at least 18 years old. But this job allows you to work from home doing a combo of research and data entry. The data revolves around apartments. I believe it's a database for searching using criteria like cost, size, location, and amenities.

2. Clickworker
– Crowdsourcing is here to stay and this site allows you to pick and choose from various types of “piece-meal” jobs. These can be anything from writing to simple data entry. Though the pay rate per piece can vary and be somewhat low (sometimes outrageously low) — those that can work fast can actually rack up some earnings.

3. Great American Opportunities (Southwestern Fundraising)
– From what I gather – they hire data entry workers seasonally. They are a huge fundraising site (think about all those fundraising packets your kids bring home for cookie dough and wrapping paper!). They hire workers to input all the orders once they've all been turned in. Like I said, this is seasonal and there is no online app. You have to email them if you're interested. The last address I noted was: [email protected]

4. TDEC
– Well known for hiring data entry workers that can work from home. They are not always hiring, you'll just have to frequent their jobs page for any online data entry positions in your area that allow home-based work.

5. Fiverr
– Do not over look this. There are many, many people making full-time incomes and nice supplemental incomes on Fiverr. If you can offer affordable data entry, then consider creating your free Fiverr account and offering different price points and then doing some self-promotion.

6. SmartCrowd/Formerly Virtual Bee (My SmartCrowd Review)
– They've typically got several projects going on for many different clients. These projects can and do involve data entry at times. You'll be able to sign up, log in and apply for projects. Though the base pay works out a bit low, it's still home-based work and the data entry work you're looking for.

I Can't Find Anything

It can be discouraging. I understand. There have been many writing jobs that I have failed to snag and I took it personally. Now I just take it as a lesson to learn and improve. With data entry, continue to hone your typing skills, maybe get a certification or two. If there is an online class or community college class near you, take an MS Office class or specifically Excel.

Every step brings up your odds of getting hired because it gives you an edge over anyone that hasn't achieved those goals.

You might also want to consider something like proofreading or transcription too. If you're unsure, there are free courses for both you can check out to even see if it's something you're interested in. There is no obligation and yes, absolutely free. Proofread Anywhere's 7 Day Mini Course and Transcribe Anywhere offers a free Mini Course too.

  12. I don’t have personal experience with every site listed or reviewed. That being said – I don’t knowingly post scams. If I find out something isn’t on the up and up – it’s removed asap.

  13. You have to make over $600 per site/company to have to claim it on taxes. Once you go over $600 – they issue a 1099 and it’s reported to the IRS.

  14. When you make money doing surveys do you claim that at tax time? Since you are making so little a year I was thinking not.
