Sending a resume without a cover letter is like flying an airplane with no
pilot. It is going to crash and burn. A cover letter is your snappy
introduction. It lets the employer know right away why he/she should hire you.
Never consider sending a resume naked, it needs its cover letter! I have always
encouraged people to write creatively, an average employer who sits and reads
resumes all day long has a rather short attention span. Be sure to write
something that will catch their eye. There are some basics to writing a good
professional cover letter. I will outline them below:
 1. Your name and full address with your e-mail address comes first. 2. The name
and address of the person and company you are addressing it to. 3. The date. 4.
The title of the person you are addressing the cover letter to. 5. Your
introduction 6. (Skip a line) The body of the cover letter. Let hem know about
your skills and what you can offer to the company, let them know you are looking
to telecommute from your home office. 7. (Skip a line) Your closing paragraph.
Insist on an interview and thank them for their valuable time and consideration.
8. Closing (Sincerely, Respectfully) 9. Your signature
Here is an example cover letter - but at the bottom of this page you can find
popular books on cover letters. Having a book on hand to refer to is a nice tool
to have. I own three cover letter and resume books myself. I've even thought
about writing resumes for others. But I really feel like you can save yourself
some major bucks by doing it yourself. And with books to refer to - it makes it
so much easier.
Be sure to have someone objective take a look - some times a fresh set of
eyes can fine tune a cover letter or resume for you.
