Make Money at Home as an Essay Reader for the ACT

Being a Test Scorer for ACT

Back in high school, when I had to take the ACT, it never occurred to me that I would one day I would look at the standardized test as a good way to supplement my work at home income, yet today, that’s exactly what I’m doing. The ACT is currently on the hunt for individuals who work at home and are willing to both read and score the essays students have written for the writing portion of the test.

How It Works

The system currently being used to handle the scoring is the Electronic Performance Evaluation Network, which was created by Pearson Educational Measurement company which has been around for about 50 years. The current system makes it possible for freelance contractors like you and me to help grade the student essays without ever leaving the house.

As long as you have a good computer, a reliable internet connecting, a Bachelor’s degree, and are willing to spend time each week reading essays penned by high school students, you’re good to go. The ACT prefers to work with individuals who have a background in education. When you apply, you should be prepared to provide detailed information about what you taught, the syllabus, and the institution you taught for. The more information you can provide, the greater the odds that your application will be approved. Ideally, the company would like you to have worked with high school juniors and seniors who intended to go to college. (Write Score is a company that might interest you as well. They hire home workers to grade tests.)

The Pay for Scoring Tests and Essays

The amount The ACT will pay depends on the quality of the work you turn in and the rate that you're able to work. If the company is pleased with your work, you can expect to earn $12 per hour. According to the ACT’s website, they do offer a very good benefits package that includes medical and dental health care, as well as retirement benefits. There are also scholarships available for your children. I’m unsure of how difficult it is to qualify for these benefits.

Essay Scoring Training

My only concern with this particular job is that there simply isn’t much information about it. I have no idea how extensive the training is, how many hours a week the company expects freelance contractors to work. (Check out my list of other companies that hire Test Scorers here.

Additional Opportunities Like Writing

In addition to score recorders, ACT is also looking for freelance writers who will serve as:
– Item writers who will be responsible that the actual test questions accurately reflect what’s being taught in schools across the United States
– Fairness Consultants who will be responsible for evaluating the overall fairness of the questions at both state and national levels
– Test Question Writers who will be responsible for creating the questions.
I’ve been unable to find what the average pay scale is for these three freelance writing opportunities.

Final Thoughts

The ACT is providing qualified individuals with the opportunity to earn income while working from their home office. It’s a good opportunity that I feel qualified individuals should take advantage of. If you have experience working with ACT, I’d love to hear about it!

Did you apply for that position yourself? What did you select when it asked what region you wanted to apply for? It doesn’t sound like an online job and that’s not an option for when you’re selecting which one. :(

I am looking for a work from home job. Unfortunately, I did not go to college, however, I still managed to pull in a 6 figure income. I was a Realtor for many years, and specialized in selling new homes. I have a Certification to sell Medical Devices as well as my Real Estate License. About 5 years ago I was diagnosed with wet macular degeneration in my left eye. I have lost most of my vision in that eye. Thank God, my right eye is great. I feel uncomfortable driving a car around for any extended period. I much prefer to work from home. If you know of any typing or customer service positions, I would be eternally grateful to hear about them. I did win the JD Powers & Associates Award for Customer Satisfaction 7 times in my career. My phone # is xxx-xxx-xxxx I appreciate any advice you may have for me. Thank you very much!
