Write Score Test Scoring from Home – Is It Right for You?

Write Score offers one of the work at home opps that I'm seeing more and more of in the form of test scoring. Raters to help during the busiest season are needed. Teachers looking to supplement your income after retirement might enjoy the work of being a scorer during their yearly scoring season. Also, those hoping to get out of the classroom setting and work at home full time should consider jobs grading state tests like this one.

Requirements for Write Score

Most programs that want freelance contractors to handle test scoring require a teaching background with a Bachelor’s degree. Write Score doesn’t. However, you will need to show proof of an associate’s degree (2-year college degree). I’m guessing applicants with teaching experience will be given preference. Write Score doesn’t require that you have prior test scoring experience either. They will give you clear guidelines and instructions.

Keep in mind, they are looking for individuals who are computer literate, have strong communication skills, and are reliable about meeting deadlines and submitting high-quality work.

You need to be a current U.S. resident and have reliable internet and a good computer. You'll certainly need at least basic computer skills, as I stated. They also like to communicate via email. You can contact Write Score to learn more about the application process. But also check out CareerBuilder, I've seen the company promote there.

Most raters will grade essays written by high school students. But there can be off shoots from just your typical essay for English language arts. Subjects can range from mathematics to social studies too. These can be in the form of exams and not essays — but ultimately you're hired to score student responses.

The Training Program

To me, it looks like the most difficult aspect of working for Write Score will be the training. Everyone reports that the training is long and intense. Some have stated that training consists of 300 test items to score. Successfully getting through training doesn't guarantee a position. Apparently, the company only has a limited number of opportunities available and there isn’t always space for everyone to be given assignments.

The company doesn’t charge anything to train their raters. They do not offer paid training either. You’ll have to decide if your willing to devote a chunk of your time to the training. You might ultimately decide that your time would be better spent looking for other work at home opportunities. (See more Online Test Scoring Jobs that I have listed.)

There are some Write Score reviews on Glassdoor. They score almost 3 stars out of 5.

The Pay at Write Score

Though I don't know the exact pay rate for remote workers scoring tests for Write Score, I do know it varies between $8 and $15 an hour. The higher quality scores you can process in an hour, the better you’ll be paid. So, this makes a great “extra money” gig for those looking for something seasonal. This is part-time work. So as well as being seasonal, it's limited hours too.

I don’t know if the company offers any additional benefits or not for their test scorers. Reports from individuals who currently work for Write Score state that the company is always on time with payments. So, as a remote test scorer, knowing this can help alleviate worries of not being paid because you're working remotely.

Is This Online Scoring Job Flexible?

For the most part, Write Score is a very flexible source of income. When a project is assigned to you, it comes with a deadline that’s strictly enforced so if you struggle to meet deadlines, Write Score probably isn’t for you. But somewhat flexible work schedules seem standard.

It goes without saying that this seasonal job falls within the school year.

To Apply

As I stated earlier – they do not have a “Careers” or “Open Jobs” page on their site – but they do have a contact form (e-mail) and you can reach out to them using it here. As well, they post jobs on CareerBuilder when they have openings.

There are several other companies that offer online test scoring jobs that can be done from home.

You’ll need to reach out to Write Score and ask if they are open to hiring in your country. I’m thinking they probably aren’t – but it never hurts to ask. They might make an exception or have changed their current hiring restrictions.

  3. Does anyone know exactly which months Write Score offers work? I’ve read that offer work around 5-6 months per year, but I was wondering which specific months they usually offer work.

  4. They don’t have an online application or Jobs or Careers page. They only offer a contact page and prefer email. That link is above in the article.

  5. Do you have a link? I can’t find anything on their website about how to apply.
