Acclaimed writer who just sold a book proposal to Simon & Schuster seeks an editorial researcher to help gather and parse resources.


-Bachelor's degree
-2-5 years of experience doing deep and widely-encompassing cultural and scientific research, including primary sources, scientific journals, and subject matter experts
-A clear and concise writing style
-Organizational skills that result in neat and clear presentation of findings
-Willingness to contact sources by phone and/or arrange meetings
-Highly communicative
-Good time management skills
-Sufficient command of technology needed for remote work (email, file sharing, call recording)

-Science degree
-Ability to parse scientific study results for flaws
-Interest in nutrition, exercise, and biology
-A love for strength training

Time commitment is 5-10 hours per week (flexible). Contract renews on a month-to-month basis. Remote welcome.

More about the book: “She's a Beast” and “Ask a Swole Woman” columnist Casey Johnston's TK TITLE, a cultural analysis (critique?) of the historic, economic, and psychological forces that lock us into mainstream Western diet and fitness culture, using the author’s journey into weight lifting as a framework for understanding how we can build many kinds of strength—muscular, emotional, and spiritual—by redefining the ways we look at our bodies, food, and exercise.

More about the author: Casey Johnston is a is a cultural critic, writer, editor, NASM-certified personal trainer, and lifter of heavy weights. She’s worked in media for 14 years, and most recently was the editorial director of health and lifestyle coverage at VICE.

Casey grew up in the Adirondacks and got her Bachelor’s of Science in Applied Physics from the Columbia University engineering school. She has worked as a senior tech/science/health editor at The Outline; a senior health/tech editor at Wirecutter; and as the culture editor at Ars Technica.

In 2016, Casey started a science-based column about strength called Ask A Swole Woman, which now lives within her newsletter, She’s A Beast. In December 2021, she published LIFTOFF: Couch to Barbell, a training program for total beginners who want to feel stronger and build a more meaningful, functional relationship with their bodies.
