Learn More about the at Home Test Scoring Jobs Offered by ETS

ETS is a company that works closely with the academic community, providing them with constructed response scoring. They’re currently looking for freelance contractors who are willing to work from home and serve as readers and evaluators. The company needs evaluations for written tests, essays, portfolios, and spoken responses. All of the work is to be done online. You will need to have a dependable internet connection, solid computer skills, and a good phone line. Their online test scoring jobs are a great way to have a flexible schedule and earn right from your own home. (You might also want to check out Write Score, they only require an associates degree and not a 4-year degree.)

The Work Load

From what I can tell, ETS has work available all year round, though it looks as though there are periods of time when the amount of available work will be lighter than others.

Applying for Online Test Scoring Jobs at ETS

If you don’t live in the United States, you won’t be able to work for this company. ETS is primarily interested in hiring contractors that have a background in teaching. If you decide to apply to work for ETS, you’ll need:
• To take your time and make sure you answer all of the questions on the ETS application. Expect this company to confirm the validity of your answers.
• A resume that focuses on your teaching experiences and the type of classes you took while in college.
• A syllabus that provides detailed information about the classes you taught. This syllabus should include both the name of the institution you worked for at the time and the name of the course.

Once ETS receives your application, the entire packet is reviewed by a recruiter. If they think you’ll be a good match for the company, the information is passed on to the Chief Reader who further evaluates the information. If they approve your application, they’ll send you an official letter and fill you in on the what the next step of the hiring process will be. It’s my understanding that it usually doesn’t take more than a few days for applicants to get a response.

ETS does have a generic training program that is reported to be easy to complete. Once you have completed the training program you won’t have to repeat it again each time you switch to a different program or start scoring a new test.

Once you’re a part of the ETS team, you need to be prepared to have your home office regularly calibrated, a process that will only a take few minutes, before you may begin scoring projects.

What Others Say About Working for ETS

While I don’t have any personal experience with this company, I’ve done enough research to be able to report that it’s a legitimate work at home opportunity. I’ve read through a long list of Glassdoor reviews and have seen no complaints about the company failing to pay its freelance contractors or misrepresenting itself. Some of the complaints comment on the company not being as organized as it should be. I have read a few comments that the freelance contractors who have worked for them felt they weren’t treated with as much respect as they felt they deserved. Of course, the good reviews seem to outweigh the bad, so if you’re a teacher craving a change, this might be worth a second look.

I did find a post on reddit about working for ETS and if it's legit, you can read that here.

Ican confirm that ETS is a legitimate company. I work at a university and we used to offer the Praxis through ETS several weekends during the academic year. I would assist with administering the exam as it was easy way to make extra cash.

Thank you so much for stopping by and taking the time to share your experience with ETS. I love hearing from those that have actually done a work at home job. People love knowing someone’s actual experience.

  7. I’ve worked as an online rater for ETS for a little over a year now. As a Rater, you must understand that it is SEASONAL work and there are no benefits. I’m fine with that. I score various assessments that I have been certified for and the hourly pay ranges from $13-$20.43/hr. Once you apply for various rater positions with ETS and they accept you, your next step is to go through online training which they pay $11/hr. Depending on the test you are certifying for training may be anywhere from 8-40 hours over a span of time.
I truly enjoy working for ETS. If the work is available, I can set the hours that I’d like to work and there is no minimum hours for working for those that may not be able to commit to a certain amount of hours.
The only thing that I do not like about being an online rater is that there is not outside support available when going though the trainings. You watch videos, do practices sets, then take the certification test. It’s almost like sink or swim. I’ve managed to pass 4 out of 5.

  8. Hi! Can you please send me all the necessary info to apply for the job. Thanks for your help

I am a former high school English teacher and now work as a part-time college advisor. I think that a job grading papers would be perfect for me.

  10. It’s legitimate. I’ve worked for ETS since April or May. I’ve gotten paid for all the training and work I’ve done so far for them. I am a SAT Scorer. The only bad part for me is that there have been no SAT tests for July, August, and September. I don’t think there is work for me until October when the next SAT test is administered. So three months of no work. It’s not a full-time job; it’s a job just to earn extra money. You never know when or how many hours you request to work get approved. There are no benefits like insurance for my position.

  11. I forwarded this information on to my daughter in college. As a work-at-home mom myself, I love finding opportunities I can pass on to my kids. Thanks for the info!
