Does your current job bore you? Do you feel like quitting because it no longer
satisfies your personal and financial needs? If you find yourself just staring
at the office wall clock eager for break time or for working hours to end, there
is an excellent chance that you no longer find satisfaction with your work. The
only reason that you cling to it might be because of inertia or the fear of what
comes next.
There are a lot of reasons why people lose interest in their work. A pretty good
reason is that they feel as if they do not grow. There are some jobs that can be
very mechanical and do not require a lot of skill application or thinking. There
are also some that do not provide any opportunity for advancement; hence salary
raises are very rare.
Fortunately, there are numerous avenues where you can put your knowledge and
skills to good use. A medical billing and/or coding career, will not only let
you utilize your memory and intellect but would also allow you to build social
relationships with your co-workers and clients.
More importantly, there are a lot of avenues you can specialize in. The more
education you get in the field, the easier it is for you to move up.
Some occupations within the industry:
Whether you choose to undergo general training or specialize in one or two
areas, there are lots of medical billing and coding jobs you can explore
including:
* medical collection
* medical claims analysis, reviews and processing
* electronic claims processing
* patient’s account representative
* reimbursement specialist
Certified medical billing specialists and medical coding associates also have
the chance to specialize in different fields including: pediatrics, orthopedics,
internal medicine, cardiology, rheumatology, gastroenterology, among others.
Moreover, you may find positions within hospitals, nursing facilities, and
physician’s offices. Otherwise you may choose to work for companies that offer
medical billing services. Home-based medical billing jobs are also available in
the industry.
What companies look for in a medical billing specialist:
Most companies would require a minimum of 9-months training in medical billing
and coding, knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, and pharmacology, and
would look in to your computer skills particularly in typing. However, some
companies prefer to hire only those with experience and certification.
How to get the job
You should always be fully-prepared when applying for a job. Make sure that you
check all the requirements and have the ability to meet them. If companies
require special training, make sure to enroll yourself in an accredited program.
If you aim to get a higher salary than before, try getting a certification
either from AHIMA (American Health Information Management Association) or the
AAPC (American Academy of Professional Coders) or from other well-known and
accredited medical schools and organizations.
If you plan to work at home or are planning to start a home-grown medical
billing and coding business, equip yourself with the right software. Having your
own software is a wise investment if you want your business to thrive.
