Product Tester? Free Stuff?
By Kelly Land, © 2008, All rights reserved.
I would love to be asked to product test expensive electronic gadgets! Can you
imagine? Companies from all over send you cellphones, PDAs, gaming
equipment...all those little fun items that are addictive and flashy!
But I think...in order for me to be a product tester for those types of items, I
need to be somewhat knowledgeable on the. Have some kind of background in the
electronics arena, or worked for a company that designed them...something?
So...if that is the case - then I guess my chances are slim.
But I do hear of people
being product testers. Just random folks asked to test a product and give their
opinion. We've all heard of medical test groups. You sign up to be a guinea pig.
I don't think I could do that - unless it was something very harmless or I had a
serious condition that might benefit from trying some experimental.
There are focus groups that will pay you to come in and give your opinion on
food, TV shows, movie trailers, movie endings, beverages, ice cream....
But from what I've seen - you need to live in a major market area for that (ie:
big cities!).
I do occasionally see opportunities like this one from Hewlett Packard:
http://www.hpproducttest.com/moreinfo.shtml
Or something like this - homeschooling type products:
http://www.homeschool.com/ProductTester/default.asp
Or how about Nike shoes? (You do have to return the shoes to Nike though!

There are companies like
BzzAgent that want product testers. You sign up (totally free), and once
registered you can select a campaign as they become available. You'll either
receive notice via email - or you can keep checking back with their site for new
campaigns. If there is a campaign you think you'd be interested in
testing....you sign up for that one. You're then sent a campaign kit with the
product to be tested, coupons, a
BzzAgent code of
conduct card and a product info booklet of some sorts.
You'll need to read the booklet, try the product. Once you know the product
pretty well - you'll need to chat with someone about it. Friend,
family...stranger. You'll want to be able to describe their reaction ( good or
bad ) because you're going to input it on your
BzzAgent Report.
You need to be honest and thorough.
You earn points for bzz-ing and they can be redeemed for all kinds of good
stuff. They currently have over 360,000 consumers testing for them.
There is the Product Test Panel too. Now....they promise items like
washers/dryers,
iPhones,
Playstation 3 and more. I have not interviewed anyone at their company
to date. They have been around since 2004. Sounds too good to be true - but you
just never know. The competition for companies pressures them into spend
millions on marketing to get the word out. I do think there is criteria for this
company.
Of course, there are tons of companies online wanting you to take
surveys, so I
guess that's doing a product "test" of some sorts.
Just keep your eyes open and keep researching. There are probably some good,
quality (and decent paying) focus group opps out there. Plus, by keeping an eye
out and researching - you have the best chance of snagging one of these product
tester gigs!
There are even employment opportunities for product tester jobs full time, like
this one for example:
