ORGANIZING HOME OFFICE
Home Office Space Organization and Creation
Creating Home Office Space that's Cozy and Functional

Before you leap to working at home, take my advice and learn about organizing
home office space!
OH yes.....all too well I remember the days when I first started working at
home. I knew -- I mean I really, really knew that I was gonna be able to do it.
Nothing was gonna stand in my way! Not even the HUGE mounds of laundry I
envisioned! Oh yes yes... I would let the laundry stack up I told myself. I will
let the dishes pile up. I will not let anything "domestic" interfere with my
100% dedication to my new "work at home" life and job. I didn't worry
about organizing home office space? Home office?
The kids were at play groups or school so I would manage my time and make the
most of those prized, precious "work" hours. I would cram 10 hours of work into
2-3 hour "feel the burn" of my fingertips sessions.... typing, typing, typing
and clicking and researching.....
I would also take classes to learn web design and I would make really cool candy
wrapper giveaways for my business to hand out at the kids' schools and their Boy
Scout groups, dance classes and more!
Home office space? Organizing home office space? Nah.... not me.
I would volunteer for anything and everything and talk up my business. I could
do this.....after all--I had 7 years of on-air radio experience. I ran a huge
radio board alone, pulled my own music, did my own show prep, remotes all week
long, I cut commercials, wrote ad copy, on-air interviews -- surely I could
"work at HOME".
This is the part where I say "I was wrong", right?
Actually I wasn't totally wrong. The adjustment wasn't as smooth as butter --
but it was also not painful. This is where it would have helped me to have an
idea on organizing home office space better.
I actually learned a lot about myself. I kinda got "in touch" with myself. It's
hard to explain--but when you work for yourself, you find there are parts of
your personality that have never been allowed to surface. I realized....I'm a
mean boss! Yep--I crack the whip and don't allow time off. I never dreamed I'd
be like that working at home for myself. After all -- isn't the point of working
at home to have some freedom of time and schedules?
I had to learn, quickly - how to separate work and home. The laundry upstairs
would drive me bonkers if I didn't wash it....then I felt compelled to dry
it--fold it....put it away. This ate away at my "work" time. I had to finally
give everyone their own basket and have them bring it to the laundry room when
it was full. That way I wasn't wandering around the house gathering everything
up constantly.
I learned how much I REALLY loved my crockpot and how many amazing meals you can
make with it that are nutritious, easy and yummy!
The bottom line....
Working at home will be the hardest job you ever do. Creating the space...and
the balance in your life is difficult. Having the discipline to get done what
you NEED to get done at "work" in order succeed is monumental. There are many
distractions--the biggest one is your NEW freedom of being able to work at home!
Don't allow it to stifle you or interfere with WHY you're trying to work at home
and what your ultimate goals are.
Working at home is the craziest, most satisfying and most difficult job you will
ever love---but it is SO worth it.
Find a spot and begin your plan for organizing home office supplies and
equipment. It's a start to a space you'll love, and more importantly be able to
work in!
