Why
Can't I Land a Telecommuting Job?
By Kelly Land, © 2006-2010, All rights reserved.
I get many, many emails from people desperately looking to do a telecommuting
job or find a work from home position.
Most, have children they want to be closer to (or can't afford daycare), sick
loved ones, disabilities and other very legitimate reasons to want to work from
their home office. There literally hundreds upon thousands of people in the USA
alone searching for a great telecommuting job to do from home, Sadly, some (if not the
majority) have been searching for months, even years! The most sought after
telecommuting jobs,
and therefore the hardest ones to land are in administration, data entry and
Internet research.
You send out your resume to hundreds of want ads and the employer doesn't even
have the decency to confirm that they received your resume! Well, you and
probably 10,000 others have applied for the same job! The Internet is a
wonderful place to locate a telecommuting job, but it also can be very competitive when you
have MANY people all shooting for the same job. So what do you do? You change
careers. You find a career that is in HIGH demand, get educated and make better
money and you do all this from HOME!
When I first started looking for a telecommuting job I went for a job that I had the most experience with, administration. I
realized that there was some pretty stiff competition for the handful of
administration/data entry jobs out there! I did some research and found that
anything technical (programming, web design... etc) was in high demand and there
was an extreme shortage of qualified professionals. What was even more amazing
is that in most of these jobs you didn't need a four-year degree from a college,
and ten years experience, you just need to be knowledgeable. So, I went for web
design. I took online courses in web development, bought the necessary programs
and put my newfound knowledge into practice. It wasn't long before I was
building web sites for my own pleasure as well as for others. I never had to
search very long before I had another employer or customer contacting me for
work. My first web design job paid $25.00 per hour! (This was 7 years ago - so
keep in mind, there are many, many folks that have jumped on this band wagon!) My best advice if you want
to telecommute sooner then later is to get the skills you need to get a job that
pays well and is in great demand! Just to highlight what I am illustrating, take
a look at these jobs:

Well, you are going to need to get some more education in order to be able to go
for the more technical (and higher paying) jobs. Most universities are online
and offer home study. No matter your age, you can still apply for financial aid
and/or scholarships to help pay for the classes. "Virtual classrooms" are
becoming more and more accepted as a solid way to get the certification you need
to succeed. If you're not afraid of the technical (this includes software
operation) you might really benefit in upgrading your skills in these areas.
Here are some great places to get some education (some offer FREE classes as
well!).
Penn Foster - Take classes from
HOME! They offer everything from GED programs to Medical Billing and
Transcription classes. Free brochure mailed to your home, no obligation.
Tutorials.com - They Offer Free Tutorials as well!
Wiley - Lots of free courses here! (Even free courses on Java,
HTML, Perl and more!)
CyberU
Sessions - All about web site and graphic design!

It is a great time to jump into the "technical" world. Most technical jobs are
so new that they don't require a degree in the field. So, go for it and I bet if
you stick with it you will be working out of your home AND making more $$$ in no
time! It worked for me!!
