Running your own home business can be both good and bad. If you talk to someone who runs a successful business out of their home, they will concentrate on telling you all of the good things about it. On the opposite end of the spectrum a person who is trying to get their business going and are having problems will spend more time talking about all of the things that go wrong everyday.

Which one are you going to listen to?

Any new business you start is going to have good days and bad ones. When you first get started, you will soon realize that there are not a lot of people knocking on your door looking for your product or services. It is going to take some marketing skills and a lot of effort on your part to let the world know you are in business.

A successful home business person is the person who spends money on advertising or who spends most of their time drumming up business. The business that is going nowhere, has a low advertising budget and is being run by a person who does not work at promoting their business.

Busy work is goofing off on the internet, sharpening pencils, checking your email over and over, going to the coffee shop, and whatever else you can come up with. Although little details do have to be paid attention to, that can not and should not be your focus in the beginning.

You need a customer. Then you need another one and another. The only way to get your first customer is to make a sale. If your business is operated out of your home, but really takes place on the internet you need traffic to a website.

You may have to advertise offline as well. Newspaper ads, flyers, business cards, yellow pages, and anyway you can to get your name out.

Word of mouth referrals is an important part of any successful business so it is important to do a good job for your customers and then ask them if you can use them as a reference. There is nothing more powerful for future business than a testimonial from a satisfied customer.

To summarize this article, to be successful in your home business you have to spend your time getting the business and then you have to treat your customers right. If you do this over and over, you can be a happy business owner who is successful in the comfort of your own home.
