There are many things to take into consideration if you're going to attempt to
earn university degree online.
Of course you have many questions.
Will potential employers put as much weight on an "online degree" as they would
a traditional degree? Or...if you've already earned college credits, can you
apply them to the degree you seek online?
Most colleges or learning institutions have to become accredited in order to be
recognized as legitimate (for lack of a better term). Checking into the
accreditation of the online higher learning institution you're evaluating is an
important step in the selection process.
Here in the United States, accreditation is done by outside agencies, not the
government like many people suspect. You'll want to know WHO, or which agency
gave the school it's accreditation. Remember that being a licensed university or
higher learning institute does not mean the same as being accredited! Be on the
look out for those trying to pull the wool over your eyes. You will need to be
savvy and ready to ask questions.
One way to check out accreditation is to see if they are recognized by the U.S.
Department of Education. They offer a
database of accredited programs and institutions.
After researching more, I found that you can also check with CHEA, they are
The
Council for Higher Education Accreditation. They offer a fabulous
database of Institutions Accredited by Recognized United
States Accrediting Organizations.
This is a relatively easy and fast way to check.
Of course accreditation is a guarantee that you'll receive a high quality
education. Not is not having accreditation a sign of a not offering a high
quality education. Much of your decision will be made by what type of degree you
are hoping to obtain. The higher the degree, the more verification and
accreditation will come into play.
Whatever the case may be for you and your particular needs and goals, be sure to
do the leg work first and know how the school you'll chosen will enhance your
future and help you obtain the career you want.

no obligation on your part - it simply gives you the ability to have information
